Johnson & Johnson - Trend Following Signal

JNJ2

Friday, November 6, 2009

By Gibbons Burke

After crossing below and back above the 100-day average in the last two days of October, JNJ shares did it again this week, crossing below last Friday to fall to a 13-week low ($58.78), but recovering on Wednesday and Thursday, where it closed at $59.98 with a gain of 0.8%, which followed Wednesday's 'big' gain of 1.0%. So, the stock remains above the 200-day average, and just crossed above the 100-day average, so bullish momentum is gathering. Will it continue? History suggests it might...

Q: How has JNJ performed in the past after crossing above the 100-day average price in the month of November?

A: According to the 47 previous occurrences of this event, EventEdge indicates that JNJ has shown a somewhat bullish edge that peaks 22 trading days after the event. Thus, the projected date for the peak of the bullish edge relative to the current event date (Thursday, 5 November 2009) is Tuesday, 8 December 2009. JNJ rallies in 77% of the cases (36 of 47) by an average of 5.5% relative to the close on the event date. The average of the 11 declines is -2.0%. The overall return of the 47 cases is 3.7%, which, based on the close of JNJ on the event date ($59.98), provides a target price of $62.20.

JNJ has seen a much earlier recovery from the March low at $45.48 - it reached the $60 level in July, but then has been range bound around that level, oscillating between $59 and $62. Likely this "holding pattern" in JNJ's price is related to the uncertainty regarding a government takeover of the U.S. health care economy. The projection in this article would bring the stock back to the top of the range, where there is a decent sized gap to fill on the chart.
